The diurnal cycle and temporal trends of surface winds

چکیده
Winds play an essential role in the climate system. In this study, we analyze global pattern of diurnal cycle surface (10 m) winds from ERA5 reanalysis data. We find that over land and especially sand dune regions, maximal wind speed drift potential (DP) occur during hours around midday. However, ocean, also peaks at night. Using sensible heat flux, show weaker night are due to a nocturnal cooling decouples upper atmospheric levels their associated stronger -- is much smaller ocean. data more than 400 meteorological stations USA similar trend as The timing (during day) maximum has not varied past 70 years. Yet, speed, power, exhibit significant increases with time ocean and, lesser degree, regions. compare Europe DP significantly underestimates real winds; however, temporal patterns two similar.

Temporal interpolation of global surface skin temperature diurnal cycle over land under clear and cloudy conditions
[1] The surface skin temperature is a key parameter at the land-atmosphere interface. An accurate description of its diurnal cycle would not only help estimate the energy exchanges at the interface, it would also enable an analysis of the global surface skin diurnal cycle and its variability within the last 20 years. This study is based on the 3-hourly surface skin temperature estimated by the ...
متن کاملDiurnal and Seasonal Cycles of Trends of Surface Air Temperature
A new technique was recently developed to study seasonal cycles of climatic trends of expected values, variance, skewness, and other statistical moments of climatic variables. Here we apply that technique to analyze the diurnal and seasonal cycles of trends of surface air temperature and its variability using hourly observations from nine geographically distributed meteorological stations in th...

[1] Trends and interannual variability of the surface winds (SW), sea surface height (SSH), and sea surface temperature (SST) of the South China Sea (SCS) in 1993–2003 are analyzed using monthly products from satellite observations. Time series are smoothed with a 12-month running mean filter. The east and north components of the SW, SSH, and SST have linear trends of 0.53 ± 0.35 ms 1 decade , ...
متن کاملDiurnal Cycles of Surface Winds and Temperatures as Simulated by Five Boundary Layer Parameterizations
Although most of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameterizations have demonstrated the capability to reproduce many meteorological phenomena in the lowest few kilometers, little attention has been paid to the prediction of the diurnal cycles of surface wind speed (VSFC) in relation to surface temperature (TSFC). In this study, the performance of five widely used PBL parameterizations in re...
